The long awaited partial Ikea kitchen reveal

So the last update on our kitchen was this post when we had just purchased our cabinets from IKEA. Over the course of several months we turned this vision...

into this reality...

Remember the kitchen before the total reno?

In fact you can still see the remnants of the old kitchen on our ceiling (umm, imagine a sheepish grin). So yes, the kitchen has been mostly functional for a year now but we still have to decide how we're redoing the lighting and the ceiling. Ripping out the old cabinets left some not so pretty and not so easily covered marks so we're debating whether to hire somebody to refinish the ceiling with some ugly texture or maybe hide all the imperfections with tin tiles or planks. Hmm, you'll probably see the conclusion in a year or so.

I'll be posting more in depth on the kitchen renovation including how we customized our Ikea kitchen to our space.

Anyway, so what went into this renovation and what do we have left to do?

  • Demo (cabinets, tile, counter top, floor)
  • Install hardwood floors (to include the den)
  • Assemble and install cabinets
  • Install appliances
  • Install back splash
  • Put up open shelves
  • Trim (crown molding, baseboards, etc.)
  • Paint
  • Window treatments
  • Fix ceiling
  • Install light fixtures
  • Accessorize (to include a message boards, possible gallery wall, trash/recycling)

Aww, this makes it look like we have more to do than I thought.

    1. Thanks for stopping by! The canisters are from TJ Maxx I think. I thought they went well with the space.

  3. I love your kitchen! Did you seal your counter tops? I'm considering the same ones and I'm not sure which direction to go.

    1. We didn't seal the countertops. We just used the Behandla beeswax polish from Ikea about every six months. In between polishing we use Skydd mineral oil (also from Ikea if you couldn't guess). It's a bit more upkeep, and we have to be careful with spills and not leaving defrosting juice cans on our counter (oops). I'd love to hear what you decide! Good luck!

  4. Hi Kristen
LOVE your kitchen! Can I ask about the cabinets surrounding the fridge? Are those assembled out of a combination of regular ikea cabinets? They look so custom going all the say to the ceiling and with the molding on top. How high are your ceilings? We're hoping to do something similar and also have an older home with up slightly uneven walls.
Thanks so muc, and now off to check out the rest of your house!

  5. Thank you so much! We used a combination of regular Ikea cabinets. Our ceilings are roughly 96 inches high...in most places (yay for older homes!). We used the 88x24x24 high cabinets with a 36x18x24 cabinet above the fridge. My husband raised the high cabinets using wood blocks and extending the black legs the cabinets come with almost all the way. We used extra pieces of cover panel to make the toe kicks since the regular toe kick wasn't high enough after raising the cabinets. We'll be posting more detail on this as well as on adding the crown molding soon! Let me know if you have any more questions!

  7. Wow! You totally nailed the kitchen you visualized into reality, and what’s great is that it looks a lot better than your expectations. Yes, there are still a few things to do, and that’s awesome because it means this kitchen will be lovelier than it already is. Cheers!

  8. Amazing! You turned it exactly the way you had it in your mind. Not everyone is capable of that fastidiousness. I’d love to see the progress – how you made that picture come to life. Perhaps, you could spare us some tips? Cheers!
